It's been a very long time since I last recced here, but I'm trying to take off the dust-covers and open a few windows. I'd like to do a bit of a tag system overhaul, but the size of the project is fairly daunting. Anyway, here's a meagre selection of recs, read over the past two years.

Does really well with the girl bits - the stress about being short tying into stress about not having breasts. The slowly developing interest in boys. The giggling with the girls and teasing guys over crushes, Ron pulling away and coming back because he thinks he should have guy friends. Just in general the change in dynamic of the trio because two are girls and the change in how Harry reacts to things as a girl is well observed.

D.S.S. Requirement by esama
[WIP]
The HP crew discover the space ship and begin to systematically work through the benefits of having access to superior technology. They don't just pass over the utter coolness of the spaceship and instantly use it for war/plot reasons. It hits my worldbuilding/exploring kink. It's WIP, but possibly abandoned, so while the war starts to come in, there's no actual fighting.

There's no Temeraire characters directly involved. The focus is really just on the HP crew learning how to survive on a desert island and the enjoyment of their magical worldbuilding

This is in the mode of arsenicjade's hurt/comfort. It's really heavy on the hurt. Has that intensity where the character is so stressed and in such a heightened, fearful state, they no longer know what normal rules of society are or how to function normally. Plus it has all the drama of being both an amnesia fic and foe-yay. Hits a lot of my spots, basically. Plus it's long.

While the author mentions in the note that this is a nod to James Bond and ridiculous spy movies, it makes me think of Shadow of the Templar, I think because they both kick off with a fake identities, ballroom party, ridiculously smexy type scene. (Which is admittedly a spy movie cliche). Anyway, Steve is so earnest, and the UST is sparkling hot.

Life of Crime by neveralarch
Clint/Natasha/Bucky, Clint/Carol [AU] [pretty damn funny]
I love that it incorporates Clint's deafness into the storyline. I also love the whole right side of the wrong line, not really bad guys but not really good guys thing it has going on. As the author's note says, it definitely draws on the Aja/Fraction comics and has that whole, Clint's just a human, he's out of his league drama. The tone is great, lots of quips, dry humour. A fun read and a good length.

THIS IS SO GREAT. Everything about it is just fannish and fun. I love how it brings in source from all over and you get that shock of recognition and then the satisfaction when you agree with the vidder. YES. THEY ARE DRIFT COMPATIBLE. VERY MUCH GOOD. I challenge you not to tear up watching this.

Really great fit of music to subject matter, really nice matching of video to the song's pace changes, and later matching of subject matter as well, which worked great since I'm not familiar with the source, (but it looks craaa-zy and psychedelic.) Great dramatic build. Definitely a vid that grew on me after repeat viewings. Very frenetic and fast. (Warning: stuttery cuts and bright lights.)

There were a lot of really great Wonder Woman vids at the con, but this one really grabbed me. There's a really great build- matching the music to the footage, that just catches you up in her story. I don't know the source very well, so it was great to have the vid pull me in so smoothly. You can't help but root for and feel for Wonder Woman in this. WHERE IS OUR MOVIE?

Upbeat, quick tempo happy making vid. Lots of fun and comedy. I really like the swapping of POV, and the way the two vocals fit the two characters.

I love Whoopie's face! The expressions she pulls at the beginning, and then all the smiling at the end. Guaranteed to make you want to sing by the end. Very smoothly put together the two movies. Some really nice matching of song to clip in a couple of places.

Quite haunting. The ending is very bittersweet, sad because of the events of the finale and what they found out. But most of the vid is happier, showing them all finding each other and finding themselves in each other, Really like all the mirroring towards the beginning.

This one has a very different tone to the previous vid. And as you can see, a different focus as well, which distanced it as well from the other WW vids in the con which tended to be more straightforward - WW, FUCK YEAH! Kind of vids. I really like how this, despite using more sources (?) than the other, manages to really root it in her backstory. Very dreamy and flowing.

Made me ship them more then the movies did. (God, she is tiny). Whole vid is very flowy and dreamy, each clip seems to move seamlessly into the next. Romantic and adorable. While the lyrics work nicely, I find I'm not focusing on them so much, instead the vid seems to work well as a cohesive whole.

Spot on song choice. Lots of entering and leaving spaces/lives. Great repetition of motifs for the doors and her expressions of hope and then despair!

I'm in two minds about this vid. On the pros - The vid is technically great, as I'd expect from a Creaspace vid. The colouring is gorgeous, the cutting is slick on the beat. It showcases really well the whole gangster style it's going for, the slick luxury and the money, the sudden cut to colour and violence. All the sharp suits and dancing girls and cars and clothes and everything is completely glamorised in a completely self aware way.

I just really don't like the singer cut in there. Her singing looks like a bad dub. IDK if it is actually off? I doubt it since everything else is technically so sharp, but something about it doesn't work for me.

Epic apocalypse vid. This is basically the best version of the vid I wanted to make but probably never will now. Very smoothly draws parallels from all the apoca movies in such a way as to make it a single constructed reality vid. Lots and lots of fire.

Sad robots. Again a constructed reality from multiple sources. Anti-robot hate and oppressed/homeless cyborgs. Protests, riots, police brutality. Uses a couple of characters to maintain an emiotional thread within the wider story. Very elegantly contructed narrative (Warning for violence)

Oh Starbuck you massive mess. A strong action vid, that also focuses on Starbuck and how awful her life is, just killing and flying and killing and constant death and war. Even the tiny snatches of happiness just serve to emphasise how awful everything else is.

Lots of very seamless moving back and forth between the storylines. Nice mirroring and repetition.

I'm never sure which I like better, this vid of Paralyzer. Certainly they are the definitive Prison Break vids for me. All the shippy feels. All the intense crazy cat and mouse, double crossing, drug addicted, crazy intelligent shippy feels. And that knife scene, that goddam scene. UNF. I think Paralyzer is more shippy, but I do love the mirroring in the beginning of this vid, with Mahone all trying to get into Michael's head.

Weirdly, despite being a massive H/D shipper, I saw this less as shippy,a nd more a platonic obsession. I guess, there's a limit to how shippy you can be with child-footage. But the vid works as a Draco character study as much as anything, and the lyrics work really well to emphasise that. The POV is really strong the whole way through, even with the clever mirroring betweek their two lives and choices.

Very very creepy. Which is what you expect from a pairing like that. I think the dual POV works really well. Really nails both of them, but still keeping the main focus on Kara and what the relationship has done to her. I think the creepy Leoben-voice works, but I can see how it might not for everyone. But certainly I think the slow, dreaminess of the song, combined with the on-the-point lyrics and the violent/abusive footage is a great contrast. (Warning for abuse and violence. I actually found this harder to watch the second time, because I knew what was coming, I think and I knew how explicitly this vid exposes the relationship to the viewer.)

I don't know the source, so a lot of this went over my head. But technically, I thought the use of fades as transitions was really amazing. A stellar example of how to vid to a very slow song without losing any momentum, but also keeping the video very in tune with the audio. I think every line end/breath was on a fade to black, and every transition a fade, just of varying lengths. There's also some nice masking going on.

Constructed reality vid. Just goers to show, Stan chooses ultra depressing stuff where he cries a lot and looks pretty. Nice use of show audio, but this, plus the sudden song change makes it feel a bit more like a Cap 3 trailer, not that that's a bad thing. I would watch that movie. (And that last line? Fucking slays me).

Belle is a refreshing mix of common sense, innocence and a firm belief in the good side of humanity. Nym neatly sidesteps those stupid miscommunication errors you often get in romance fics. There is a lot of sex that's quite tied into character and relationship, so mostly unskipppable, (I realise that's probably only an issue for me). SLOW build.

Great crossover, no OOC blurting of secrets. They may share a goal, that of safety for everyone, but they're got different angles on how it should work and there are lots and lots of tensions tying in cylons and the religious issue and the fact that all the BSG people are stressed and exhausted to the point of collapse. The focus is on Gaeta which is great because he's great! Lots of fleshing out of character relationships, really brilliant explanation for the cylons, and clever explanation for all the religious themes. In general, ties all the BSG plot thread togetrher reallyt well,. Familiarity wth tng not so important. Helps to know who the named character are and what the Borg is but memory alpha should provide you with enough if fannish osmosis hasn't. At one point you may think it'll fall in the trap of bashing but it mostly escapes it (ok, if Gaius is your absolute favourite darling, this may not be for you, though he's not in it much.) There is also an abdanoned? wip sequel.

It's very 'Indiana Jones' which I really enjoyed. The myffic stuff was fun and the mystery revealed in tantalising pieces. However the final reveals weren't as satisfying as I'd hoped and in fact the majority of plot is left undone to be dealt with in the sequel which I found frustrating enough to refuse to read it on principle. Overall the world building is clever, but the plot is too long drawn out. The relationship I didn't particularly care for, but I think that's down to my personal shipping preferences. Harry is clearly a Mary Sue with superpowers and quippy arrogance and so on, but he's self-mocking enough and at a loss enough times to save himself from being obnoxious.

Jamie Evans and Fate's Fool by the mad mad reviewer
An unusual twist in that Harry ends up in the girl-who-lived's body. Sort of interesting way of dealing with the gender change in that Harry is male and I think narratively male except when addressed by others despite the external gender of his body,. I think because the author wanted that discord, is why there's no way of gender changing in the wizarding world. In any case, the gender swap isn't actually a major part of the plot. Some fun 'Harry takes care of all the bad things', BAMFing around the place. But I did get bored towards the end and in fact gave up with a couple of chapters to go (most things had been resolved by then). Dumbledore bashing ish?

Absolutely fantastic. So many twists and backstabs on Loki's part, so much emotional gut punching inflicted on Tony. Just great. Also really hot.

Starts a little shaky, the Avengers, and Tony are quick to forgive, and Loki'a a little too open to rehabilitation, but it hits its groove, the plot itself is fun and the slow burn between Tony and Loki really amps up.

This one manages to do Midgardian OCs really well, it can be a bit hit and miss sometimes. But these guys are lovely without being so picture perfect that they're unreal.

Draws together elements of Rush and Chloe's interaction throughout the show. It's a ship that has definitely built up a certain amount of canon basis. Their relationship is an interesting one and the way Rush relates to her is different to how he relates to anyone else in the crew.

Part 1: Good characterisation for the most part. Snape starts off as being a little too evil, but he soon balances out. Well written prose. I like Harry's indecision and general boyish fail. A fair number of 'oh Harry' moments where you want to grab both him and Snape and make them talk. Does a really good job delving Harry's loneliness, ignorance and despair, post-OotP and the reveal of the prophecy.

Part 2: I liked this part slightly less. Not all of it -- the still growing friendship aspect was very good. The whole Snape/Harry idiot dance was realistic, since neither of them are paticularly good at talking about their feelings. My issue was with the plot: Harry's continuing rashness and lack of paranoia, his constant insistence on disregarding rules and danger. Plus all the adults' continual holding of secrets, even after hints have escaped and Harry has a thread to pull on. You'd expect them to know what he's like by now, instead they tell him, 'don't investigate' then act shocked and angry when he... wait for it, investigates. That said, these are issues I have with the books as well, so really my problem is that the fic is just too IC!

I had issues with Candide the first time I read this, after reading again, I'm not really sure why, there's nothing wrong with her character. I think I was still a bit too invested in the exclusivity of any Snape/Harry relationship, whether sexual or familial. Either way, this is long and plotty, (really long) Part three is a WIP though. I like the worldbuilding and the magic, I like Harry's powers and the way they tie into the plot. The plots themselves are intriguing and mysterious enough to keep you guessing, and the cast of characters are well fleshed out, whether canon, minor or original.

The epilogue... well, it's an eilogue, but it's not nearly as bad as canon.

Deals really well with all the various issues: Cylons and humans, love, humanity, forgiveness, parenthood. Made me want to cry a billion times over.

Young/Rush [long!fic], [ust], [intense] [mindbond!fic], [epic], [pulling at the heartstrings], [hurt/comfort] Warning: Deals extensively with the Gloria/cancer plotline.

Rush is forced into the chair and into a mental link with Destiny, Young mind-bonds with Rush in a bid to save him from becoming entirely one with the ship. It's long and it's plotty and wonderful. I love the whole AI consciousness question, Destiny and the AI are characters in their own right. In general the characterisations are very good -- We get a deepening understanding of Rush that follows Young's own progress in-fic, it all rings very true. It answers the problem of how Rush's genius works (why he needs Eli to solve the 9th chevron and yet he solved all the others). The plot develops like the relationship, a nice slow build towards understanding, gradually becoming more complex and revealing more sides to the characters. Young POV and his desperate tiredeness is perfect. The focus on Rush and the insight into his fractured psyche is wonderful, and it also gives us a delicious look at Telford: villaneous and comples and at times downright creepy. The side characters are well done too, especially Greer and TJ and the way they relate to both Rush and Young. It starts slow, but is definitely worth sticking with. Also check out the one shots that are meant to be read alongside the main fic.

The premise and first few chapters are deceptively slow/starightforward, the whole fic gets progressively darker, angstier and more tense. Delicious h/c and plenty of mental trauma.

Parts 3 and 4 are about Tyler, dealing with being chosen and dealing with training. It's Xander pov and Tyler pov. They can standalone without the rest of the series. Parts 1 and 2 are a SG1/Buffy [crossover] where Jack is Xander's father. They're also pretty fun, the writing isn't all that polished at first, but the crossover is interesting and the secret keeping is well dealt with on both sides.

Set in the early seasons, Sam starts getting visions of him and Dean together. The story is a slow, dreamy progress over the months, cases, motel rooms, diners and roads. The pace is steady but relaxed, and the tension mounts only through Sam's thoughts about the visions. The characterisation and the delving into their relationship that Sam attempts are all written really well, very IC. The main reason I'm reccing however, is that the writing is really, really good. Sparse and dreamy with some gorgeous turns of phrase. It's a pleasure to read.

"Sometimes he tries to put his life into words, so he'll be able to remember it better. It was always hard to explain things to Jess and Zach and Becky and all of his friends at school. He'd try to talk about Dad and Dean, or his childhood, and everything would seem too vast and thin and empty. So now he tries to remember, as if by rolling concepts around in his mind he can make them more permanent.

Being sunburnt and having motel pool water run down his arms. The too-cold feeling of an air conditioner at four in the morning. Vinyl under his hands, thick and slippery and catching his skin when he sweats. The blur of heat coming off the cement in San Clemens, Nevada. Truck stop eggs with Tabasco, scalding so hot that his coffee is harsh on his raw throat. Gun metal going warm in his hand from body heat. Early spring skies in the midwest, bright and the color of nickels. Girls smiling like sunrises because their fathers, their children, are safe."

And it's all tied into the fic so effortlessly, for example, the sex scene that serves to illustrate so much about the world and the characters, while still remaining scorching hot!

I love the way canon is turned on its head with regards to the first part: the famine and Midgard, and Odin. And with canon Thor knowledge the ending is all so desperately tragic. This fic broke me.

Read in conjuction with Deejay's Handlebars vid.

Snape is Harry's father, plot happens. It deals with changing relationships, family, growing up, Voldermort, blood politics and werewolves. This is a fandom classic that I couldn't get into back when I first encountered it. I decided to give it a go recently figuring my tastes might have changed, and apparently they have because not only did I love it, I was completely hooked as well, it kept me up way past my bedtime! Snape has a deliciously Sherlock-ish character, rather more mature and emotionally controlled than in other fics, and while the past is important, he's less obsessed with it than he is in canon. It features a mature!Harry, which is a characterisation that not everyone like, but I happen to love. I enjoyed the worldbuilding: the details of school life and magical theory, and the characterisation, once you accept it as not-quite-canon, is internally consistent and a lot of fun, it's interesting to see how the relationships change over the course of the fic. It also quite satisfyingly nails the volatile nature of the Golden Trio's friendship. (When are they not fighting?) Could do with a Brit-pick, but that's just a minor quibble.

What I really liked about this was the way it absouletly nailed Anne's shyness. The God-awful hideousness of being at a party full of strangers, not knowing how to initiate conversation and stuck watching all these people who are chatting so easily and laughing and having a great time and they're all so completely incomprehensible it's like they're a whole other species.

There's also a delicious unreliable narrator element, not just because the reader is likely to know how a romance format works and so can guess who will end up with who, whereas Anne is stuck living it, but also because the reader can see through Anne's pretentousness as well as her ignorance to the real picture of what's happening underneath.

It's all very well done: solid characterisation and a good job with the research and Regency details. In all satisfying Regency romance with an unlikely and occasionally unlikeable sort of heroine.

First listen to the Sharpe theme to get you in the mood. (OH SHOW.) This fic made me start reading Temeraire, and now I wish Sharpe would turn up in canon. Everything fits very smoothly, the universes mesh very easily and the characters all interact in realistic ways. Canon knowledge or period knowledge not necessary, though I did know Sharpe going in, but I think even not knowing him would be fine. Lots of excitement, adventure and a lovely Sharpe POV.

This is the series I'd like to watch. Arthur and Merlin are exiled, Morgana steps up. Lots of lovely political drama with all the nights and all the history - so much of the pre-series sorcery revolves around powerful women and the choices they made.

I love the way it absolutely nails the skin crawling creepiness of Jim. The entire section dealing with their relationship is heart-breaking and wawful and just makes you love Molly even more. I love that Molly's sensible and clever in this, it doesn't treat her like some brainless little assistant, She's an intelligent woman who's studied hard and knows her shit, plus she's competent and in charge in her job and okay so Sherlock flusters the hell out of her, but she's a normal human being, we all have weak spots. There's a tendency to dumb down everyone not Sherlock or John in Sherlock fic, and I like how this doesn't at all fall into the trap, these people (Lestrade included) are good at their jobs, and they can read people or be good listeners as well.

Despite the fact all the emotional punches follow canon and are therefore not 'surprising,' they're really well written -- gathering up all your heartstrings and delivering a sharp tug.

I got very choked up when reading all the touching 'being true to yourself' bits about them and their relationship. The characterisation is very well done, still recogniseable and there are some wonderful lines. I love the minor characters as well, Harry, Sally, Clara, but especially Irene.

Very good Logan character study wrapped up in a plotty, crazy crossover (he is so broken, my God). Author calls it crack, but the story isn't written in a comic or flippant way. I've only a passing knowledge of Lovecraft and I still got most of the references, and hey, that's what wiki is for. The first chapter throws you into a dream sequence, which I found a bit disorienting (as it's meant to be). But the plot itself is perfectly well structured. I liked the OCs a lot.

The entire fic is well paced, and maintains tension through the emotional plot as well as the action. It just ratchets right up there. Definitely un-put-downable. Really good twisty look at the incest, no brushing away of the issues. Pretty dark in places, when dealing with the trauma, torture and abuse etc. Fair amount of violence.

Nice slow build - wallowing in Xander's feelings, his shame, his need. Lots of sex/sexual play. Wasn't so interested once the focus shifted to the rest of the cast, ended up skipping from about 3/4 of the way into the second part. But the fic is loooong.

They haven't secretly been lusting after each other for ever. It's a bit of a reversal fic, the bond comes first and the relationship second, it's slow and painful and epic. It all feels very well world-built. Very solid despite branching off into AU territory. I like the darker tone, everyone a bit more ambiguous and complex. The Stiles pov is perfect, tense but still with the edge of Stiles-craziness.

I usually dislike Eduardo being in the wrong, but it works very well here, this is a set up I can buy into. His reaction to Mark is neatly tied into his own hangups. For all his apparent open-ness, he does have these serious issues. But then, he's till Wardo, he's still utterly in love with Mar, and bouncy and adorable. "Eduardo’s eyes get wide, and then he’s beaming, the only person in the world who could respond to a sexual proposition like you’ve offered him a basket of kittens and rainbows and candy."

Sam, Dean [timetravel] [long fic]
Love the details of the 1800s, get to feel all of Dean's childish glee at being back there, being a gunslinger. Just very good atmosphere to the whole thing, feels very wild west. I love Zeke, love the whole demon/gate plot. Very tense, action-filled fic, there's just something damn cool about riding in on your horse, guns blazing. Big damn heroes. Lots of brilliant hurt in this. Old-timey medicine was harsh. I love the complexity of the brother's relationship as well, The moments we get inside Sam and Dean's heads.

Yeah I was on a bit of a wild west/cowboy au kick. This ones just brilliant as well, nice ambiguity at the beginning and sustained by the awesome outsider POV. Love all the OCs. Again, loving all the details about how the boys dress. the whole into sequence is basically a love story to Dean's eyes and lips and body and everything. UNF.

I think I recced this back when it was a WIP. but it's complete now. Wonderful AU. Great characterisation, lovely slow build up 'ship, Seth all adorable and persistent. Ryan all broken and afraid. Deals extensively with grief and loss (character death, not Ryan or Seth).

God, I love Ryan's thought processes in this, the way he connects love and violence over and over. The way he's totally hurting and just flying blind, but keeps coming back to Seth as his anchor even though he doesn't quite realise it and can't quite trust it, a bit heartbreaking. Lots of Seth-funny in his rambling, particularly the over-45 thing.

Healer Potter is assigned to the rehab ward headed by one Mr Malfoy.
Simple enough set up, Harry and Draco moving from dislike to friendship to more, with a solid mystery plot thrown in. The stuff that makes is worth reading are the character details and the way St Mungo's is brought to life. Also lovely yummy UST. And there's a locked-in-a-cupboard scene. I adore cupboard scenes ;)

OH WOW, this is hot. Like, really, really hot. There's amnesia, and there's a lot of sex. and kissing , and blow-jobs in the car with the music on loud while the cops are chasing. It's extreme. Abrupt ending though. I then went on to read everything Anna S has written, they are all absurdly hot. (I like the Xander POV ones best though) And possibly I think they end abruptly because actually I don't want them to stop. Ever.

GOD, this is gorgeous. Wonderful vid, great mood. Love the disjointed editing, really brings out the whole sleepless/insomniac relentless insanity that Brendan has in the movie. Good pacing. Lovely use of colour, with the bright, saturated flashback scenes.
